Block Island, Rhode Island, located in the Atlantic Ocean is approximately 3 miles south of Rhode Island and can be reached by plane or ferry. It is rose-strewn sand dunes, National Wildlife Refuge, clay head cliffs, coves and beaches. Where the Manissean Indians lit fires that were noted by Italian explorer Verrazzano, when he passed by the island in 1527. It’s beaches are public, you can bike just about anywhere, the accommodations are diverse with hotels, inns and rentals. There is shopping, restaurants, entertainment and recreation.
Because the island is a National Wildlife Refuge, it is quiet and peaceful and has small town ambience. Even though the population is 900 to 1000 on-island off season, when the population swells in the summer season you can still find tranquility in a sun dappled retreat on the many walking trails throughout the island.
Living on Block Island has been a dream of mine since we made our first visit in 1990. We built our home on a beautiful bluff over looking the ocean. It is a raised Cape Cod style. After renting our house many summers, we decided to retire here. It took a year to get used to island living but the people we’ve met and the charm of the island has won us over. From the deck of our home, we can see the ocean in front of us, the Great Salt Pond to the right where the sailboats with their white sails are moored in the summer and behind us we can see farms where horses and cows are grazing. Oh, I just love Block Island………what a beautiful place and a lovely story. Tell me, is it animal-friendly? I have a possum and a ferret and am worried about moving them.
